I now prefer the 60CSx simply for the bigger screen and nicer buttons. The software and features are nearly identical. The only major difference is size and button layout. I've used the eTrex Vista for years, and have moved to the 60CSx for the last year. In case it matters I will be using a Mac to manage all my data, but from what I've read here and at Garmin Connect that Mac compatibility won't be much of an issue. Am I missing some key comparison points where one model excels vs. I've been looking at the GSMap 60CSx because I like the barometric altimeter but realized that the Vista HCx what appears to be essentially the same capabilities but with a smaller screen and internal antenna but at a lower price. I'd also like to mark features (rollers, drops, etc.) along the way and overlay everything over a topo or Google maps image I'd like log data for trails that I ride, mark the intersections with waypoints that I can number/name with info from printed maps. I have a drawing with points in National Grids, DHDN Zone 3 with straight X(I) and Y(I) values. Just Remember, You are unique, just like everybody else! I have had problems with the position being shown not matching my location in the past, so I decided to work with everything in a common projection/datum, that being WGS84. I also reproject all of my field files to WGS84, for some reason it works the best for me, and the computer has less to do without reprojecting on the fly. This can be very frustrating especially on a small rugged tablet.Ī persistent, current position reticle would be very nice if added to the next version or a future update.Ī clumsy workaround is to have the GPS console draw a line in a dummy layer or log points every second, but it gets ugly after a while. It is not persistent, it does not update its position with each update from the GPS unit, so you have to constantly toggle it on and off to track your position. I usually let it sit for about 15 minutes.Īs for the position reticle in Manifold, it does not show you where you are, rather it shows you where you were. You might want to let the Xplore tablet orient itself with the GPS unit on, then reboot the unit, we have seen this problem before, and this procedure usually corrects the problem. I can put up with this as long as I know the stuff I'm recording is in the correct place but it's a bit annoying. If I switch the reticule on from the world pane, this also does not reflect the correct location. If you zoom into a large scale, you can't see what the GPS is digitising on to the map because it's off the map window which seems to be centering on some other coordinates like unprojected lat long. Also I've still not solved the problem of the GPS tracking the map. I seem to have pretty much solved my problem but it's really annoying not understanding what the cause of the problem was as the maps in both projects were British National Grid, everything was in the right place etc. When exporting the second attempt which appears in the correct location, these columns did not appear, it just exported the x,y columns as per the screenshots. When exporting the first attempt to a shapefile two columns (GPSLatitud and GPSLongitu) appeared in the export dialogue. Export that file as a shape, import it into our Cadcorp system and everything is in the correct position (at last!!) I checked the coords this time and they were the correct easting and northing coords. I recorded another GPS track, which appeared in the correct location in Manifold. I though I would go outside and revert to using my original template map which I'm pretty sure is OK projection wise as I'm importing and exporting stuff to and from it all the time to other GIS systems.
